Vintage streetcars near the Ferry Building, San Francisco
Apparently Where You Go To Get Your Shoes Polished if you work in the financial district.
Where we ate the first night - Gott's Roadside in the Ferry Building. Great hamburger, California chicken burger, and milkshakes. Fun and efficient, and you can eat inside or out. The fries were marginal ... but maybe I'm spoiled by our local Delux Burger Bar that may possibly have the best sweet potato fries in the entire world.
A few thoughts about visiting San Francisco:
- The BART (Bay Area Regional Transportation) works great to get you from the airport to central San Francisco. It cost us $8.65 each and took exactly 30 minutes. So easy and cheap.
- It is a big city. If you have kids, stay near Fisherman's Wharf where there is lots for kids to do. If you love shopping, stay near Union Square. (If you have young kids and you love shopping, wait a few more years before you go!) We stayed in the financial district which was within walking distance to Chinatown, Union Square and the Ferry Building (if you really like to walk.) It worked fine for us but would not be a great location for people with young kids.
- Because of the hills, maps are not a good indication of how long it will take to walk somewhere.
- San Francisco was much cooler than we expected. It's especially breezy on top of the open-top tour buses - we were glad for jackets.
- Wear comfortable shoes.
